Palms of the World On-Line (Palmweb)

Palms are among the most charismatic and recognisable plants in the world. The palm family (Arecaceae or Palmae) with ca. 2,400 species holds several botanical records such as the longest leaf and heaviest seed, and includes some of the most economically valuable plants in the world. They are essential in the lives of many rural communities and in the production of many modern day commodities.

What is Palmweb?

Palmweb brings together information on palm species diversity from authoritative sources that are often difficult to access and poorly integrated.

Palmweb is being developed as a part of the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT), a project that aims to facilitate access to taxonomic data and collaboration among taxonomists by taking advantage of Information Technology.
